JESUS CHRISTS: Better than Santa Claus, the Devil, and Mom and Pop

Somewhere in the Bible, it was said that elders chastised the children who they presumed to be bothering Jesus, but He told them to let the children come to Him.
Taking into consideration the characteristics of the Lord, which are quite difficult to give an exact description of; Jesus Christ would be the BEST role model, teacher, example, inspiring agent; etc, for children.
When it comes to rewards, He is better than Santa Claus since the latter always grants children their wishes so long as they had been "good" all year long. This practice will make children believe that when they do some act which they are made to believe is righteous, acceptable, or noble; they will get something in return. The Lord can explain to them the reality that these do not happen all the time; that they will not necessarily get something in return for every good act they perform. And the children can accept his word, than a costumed Santa who may have a child on his lap throwing a tantrum.
When it comes to wishes; Jesus is better than a "gynee" (sic) who grants a person's desire but asks something in return. Children might just have to "pay a price" when they are older; as a fictional teen who sold his soul to the devil  and then, as an adult; transformed into a monster each time night fell upon him.
When it comes to reality; the Lord has a far greater advantage over parents and elders because He can explain the truths and facts about life to the children;  without having to distort these. And the youths won't have the impression that such details were "rammed down their throats" or that they were forced to "swallow a bitter pill".

The "Sicilian Thing" in the Philippines: La Influenza de Italiani

The "Sicilian Thing" in the Philippines
One revolting characteristic of some Filipino communities is the misuse, or abuse of authority. It is a reality that there exists a myriad of employees in government institutions who are either uncouth or irascible towards people relying on their services. But that is a generality that has already been accepted by the masses, since they are aware of such low salary rates given granted the mentioned individuals.

But if attention is focused towards smaller municipalities and communities; most of all in a number of semi-rural, underdeveloped and provincial areas; it would be a near impossibility to miss how authoritative power falls into malpractice.

Enter a barangay hall and everything will rely on fate. This insinuates how a person requesting the services of such an office will either be treated favourably or rashly; depending on the “which side of the bed” the attendants, officers, and staff awoke that morning. Complaining will inevitably merit an embarrassing admonishment, or a threat of disservice.

Renting an apartment with a landlord who has connections and influences with community officials say, the barangay captain, a mayor, vice-mayor or the governor of a district; and reasoning against that person would make it harder than a sinner to enter the gates of heaven.

In some locales, social groups and associations will designate person who are known for pugilistic and belligerent personalities in order to intimidate residents of in the vicinity to cooperate with their mandates and regulations; as unfair and unreasonable as they are. It is not uncommon, or unheard of, for people in residential suburbs to have conflicts with committees ruling in authority. If the image of the latter cannot be marred by being hostile towards those who question them or their edicts; their most probable strategy would be to hire a few “watchdogs”  who have no concern for what impression the public may have of them. “Pay the monthly dues!, Donate to the community project!, Contribute for the repair of streets and the installation of street lamps!; and shut up even if you don’t notice anything productive happening…if you don’t want trouble.”.

Michael Corleone’s loyal servant, Al Neri, would be more favourable to converse with than the uneducated/ unprincipled ‘mouths-for-hire’.

The people who are granted authority are expected to be more dignified and rational. They are placed in those positions to serve the people; not intimidate them. These are no longer the days when bloodlines make one deserving of leading a society. Even state officials with surnames as Marcos, Binay, or Aquino come by their governance by the will of the people. It should be enough that they succeeded in fooling the latter into giving them their roles in society. Abusing such makes them loathsome and contemptible.

Such characteristics of a number of Filipino community figures and leaders would explain why there is no heroic icon named in the spirit of the nation; as the United States’ CAPTAIN AMERICA. Truth, justice and the Filipino way are shameful abstractions for someone with the letter ‘P’ emblazoned on his helmet. This description represents a sad contradiction to Abraham Erskine’s statement: “a weak man knows the value of strength and has compassion.”* In certain districts and localities of the Philippines; when the ‘little guy’ is granted power; he will not think twice about abusing it.

No wonder the only ‘captain-ed’ hero of this country is name after a gym instrument. A barbell is a more potent weapon for bashing in another individual’s head than doing them any good.

The Next Philippine President-Enough of the Wanna-Be's and put in the SHOULD-BE's

Who should be the next Philippine president: The Godfather, Dirty Harry or Spartan Queen Gorgo?

After the twenty-year regime of the late former president Ferdinand Marcos; the Filipino people had begun the practice of addressing their heads of state in more casual and overly-familiar ways. This all began with Corazon Aquino who they called “Cory” or “Tita Cory”; Fidel Ramos and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo who were known by their initials-FVR and GMA; respectively. Between the latter couple; Joseph Estrada was called “Erap”; and then; current president Benigno Aquino III has been dubbed PNOY and/or Noynoy.

It seems that candidates, who are as amicable to the people as Ramon Magsaysay was during his term, are those who are elected for the presidency of the country. Without being ungrateful to, and disregarding the achievements of, the post-Marcos presidents; there has not been a more commendable and impressive development in the Philippines’ overall image. Why so?

The answer to this is the possibility that the said rulers may have not imposed a ‘stiffer’ image on the people. Their concordance may have been the factor why their laws and mandates have been disobeyed or disregarded.

Perhaps in the current state of the Philippines; what it needs now is another reputedly intimidating superior as Ferdinand Marcos was; his declaration of Martial law improving the nation’s economy, even temporarily; and his curfew lessening crimes and disciplining the masses. For the upcoming 2016 presidential elections; the top candidates are a severely criticized vice-president and a secretary who cannot maintain his balance on a motorcycle. The POSSIBLE candidates who really deserve the position are the firm-principled Senator PanfiloLacson and the boldly direct Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago.  If he had not refused joining the candidacy; Davao Vice-mayor Rodrigo Duterte would be in the running with the two mentioned above.

The three have their own reputations and known personalities. Ping Lacson may seem like a silent mafia lord with his past experiences with the KuratongBaleleng group and the issue of the slain Dacer-journalist; among others. The following were his words when the subject of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s “Hello, Garci”- scandal took place; a statement showing his unwavering determination to his duties and obligations.
“Perhaps no incumbent senator has had the multiple displeasure of being vilified, his reputation assailed repeatedly than this humble representation. If this is the price to pay for fearlessly contributing my share in the fight against graft and corruption in government, then so be it. If by exposing people in high places and those in the corridors of power would mean creating bitter enemies or losing friends thus making my life miserable, I am willing to pay that price.”
Rodrigo Duterte was criticized by the Manila times insinuating the practice of vigilantism when he claimed that anyone carrying out illegal activities in his city was a “legitimate target of assassination”; and his comment with regards to the release of a drug lord in Manila stating that if the same entered his city, the only way he would leave would be in a coffin. But despite such detractions; the former mayor of Davao has earned the reputation for making his city the least crime-infested in the nation; most likely the result of his “intimidating reputation” and ‘extra-judicial’ ideologies.
Last but not the least is Miriam Defensor-Santiago. In many senate hearings and state assemblies; she has been criticized as giving a number of convergences a “circus-image” with the manner she delivers her statements without reserve or restraint. Perhaps she is considered as the “entertainer” when politicians gather for specific matters of state; but this is one person who obviously knows no boundaries when it comes to standing for her principles. Recall how Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam engaged one another; altering Theodore Roosevelt’s words in an episode of Looney Tunes: “I speak softly, but I carry a big stick.” If corrupt officials and criminal lords would boast such a statement, Senator Santiago might just be the equivalent of Sam by retaliating thus: “Oh yeah? Well I speak LOUD, and I carry a BIGGER stick. And I use it, too.”
What the country needs now is another president who can “make a difference” by being different. The Filipinos have to stop electing individuals who have very appealing smiles and affectionate demeanours, but cannot do much for the welfare and benefit of the masses.
It might just be better if a person who litters is approached by a person in authority who says “Excuse me. Please pick up your trash or I will haul you in jail right here and now” than one that approaches the offender with a smile and says “Good morning. May I have a moment to clarify the anti-littering rule here, please?”
There exists the fact that such daring and intrepid individuals may abuse the power given to them. Yet, there is the reality that even the most affable person attempting to gain the favour of the masses has the potential of altering into the very same thing they fear. It might just be the time to take chances once more. The people have voted past candidates with more attractive smiles and dry promises into office; only to criticize them later on. They should consider individuals such as Rodrigo Duterte, PanfiloLacson and Miriam Defensor-Santiago who are not concerned about their image but rather, their obligations. These persons are those who stand as having a far cry from being corrupted by politics than those that dwell on their public figures. (Senator Lacson, during an interview at the TV9 talk show “News CafĂ©” even stated “I hate politics.”)
The Filipino citizens, in their country’s current situation, might have to reconsider their desire for the privilege to act like a spoiled child throwing a tantrum at a store when denied the purchase of a toy; and open their minds to the possibility that a ‘good spanking’, once in a while, gives more worthy results.
The Bible suggests that parents should discipline their children in their youth; so that they may be proud of them when they are older. This country IS, after all, influenced by Christianity; is it not? The people might just have to bend over and see what a few lashes can do for the country’s benefit; than receiving meaningless hugs and kisses which lead to nothing.

The National Dignity: Where should Filipinos draw the line with being hospitable?

It has been a nationalistic belief in the Philippines that foreign investments in the country can aid its development in many ways. Filipinos do have an open mind to welcome individuals from other nations, especially when they have something to offer for the country's advancement. Having a lot of options did show its hand in, at least, some of the country's onward progress. There are Chinese, Americans, Indians, Japanese, Europeans and many other foreign business entrepreneurs who have introduced their trade and assisted the growth of the Philippines' industrial image.
In sports, the Filipino sports factions such as the FIVA basketball team; the ASKALS football team and even the locally patronized PBA teams have introduced players from other countries with the intention to enhance their performances.
Back in the days when the American military bases were stationed in the Philippines; the country was certain of the cloak of protection the Unites States' presence had to offer it. Previously, the French even decided to lend a hand to the Filipinos concerning their predicament with the Chinese military over the issue of the "West Philippine Sea"/"South China Sea" and specific territories therein.
The country HAS undeniably surged ahead in all aspects where foreigners have been included in their affairs. But opening our doors to people who are not of our race also has its price and consequences. Look back in the years before the American military were told to beat it from Philippines territory, and you will find how the city of Angeles evolved in an undignified manner of making income. Undignified, that is, speaking in consideration of Filipino women who indulged in prostitution and spawned bastards from numerous U.S. military men who used their bodies for their own selfish gratifications. It's even fortunate for the Philippine teams to be allowed to join international athletic competitions and not have other participating countries protesting: "Hey, Younghusband doesn't sound Filipino.". Where DOES the Filipino image in sports go with foreign players wearing the same uniform as the local ones?
Check out the Chinese in the country. Filipinos can be grateful for these adept businessmen for assisting in the economy's development. But of course, not all of them are respectable. And there are those of them who deserve to be slapped by  the bold Quezon City mayor; Herbert Bautista. Even Mayor Rudy Duterte; with his many intriguing criticism, did sound agreeable when he commented that "Bistek" should have done worse than just mar his palm with the arrested Chinese's facial sweat.
In the previous days' news, actor Phillip Salvador engaged a Norwegian who was delivering insulting expletives against an employee of the Sbarro Megamall branch; just because the woman erred in serving his order. The actor demanded the Norwegian apologize to the staff of the restaurant and even challenge him to a brawl.
Many foreigners, as the one mentioned, do have a way of degrading Filipinos and practicing disrespect and arrogance in a country which is not theirs. Perhaps, other than restaurants; whenever international visitors become too arrogant and immoderate in interacting with Filipino citizens; be them rich businessmen or skilled athletes; the people of the Philippines should be bold enough to look at them straight at their faces and ask the same question the Norwegian did Salvador: "Who the f''k are you?"
What a splendid sight it may have been if, other than Phillip Salvador; Mayor Rudy Duterte, Robin Padilla, and Joseph Estrada had also  been present to engage the Norwegian in the mentioned restaurant.
The people of the Philippines do not always have to kiss the white, pink, black, and yellow asses of foreigners if they value their dignity and self-respect. Other than progress, they have to value their image as well.

THE INFERIOR MENTALITY: What is the opposite of the Filipino term "Matapobre?"

The judgmental factor in determining what is right or wrong is always "the majority". This is the twisted part of society that enforces its rules and decisions on that axiom which goes: "Majority wins.".
It is quite unfortunate that there are few individuals who are condemned or rejected by the many. Enter a society where the color of your skin; the higher bridge of your nose; your capability to speak fluent English and other international dialects; and your ideas do not coincide with what is considered "ordinary" or "common"; and you are condemned.
Reside in silence and solitude among the many gossipers and unrefined individuals; and your conservative demeanor is taken as arrogance and being unsociable.
The practice of 'self-pity' is often condemned in life; but is this not put into play when people who envy the situations and advantages of others feel they are looked down upon?
Is it so wrong to tell certain persons that there is something wrong with what they have, or are doing; and that you have other better suggestions to give them? I once tried to elicit the cooperation of my fellow neighbors in my former address at Laguna. I was clarifying how we can overcome the expensive charges enforced on us by our landlord; if we could come to an agreement on how to consume the water provided us by the owner of the building. The people I spoke to-because I kept to myself most of the time; spoke my mind freely when I knew I had a point; and because I was a former resident of the urbanized Manila area; eyed me and disregarded my proposal.
(And maybe because my features as a half-breed or 'mestizo' were so obvious as well.)
There is an adjective-noun in the Filipino language that gives so much favor to the poor and impoverished: "matapobre", meaning those people who look down at the less fortunate. Well, I would like to challenge this by asking "WHAT IS IT'S OPPOSITE?"
Sometimes, just because people are different in their appearances; their ideas; and practices; they are already condemned as oppressing the less fortunate masses. But it is the latter who sometimes create that idea by thinking too low of themselves and envying the others who they deem "far better off" than they are.
So then, if there ARE arrogant people who look down at the plebeian; society should also look at their counterpart and condemn them as well.
Bad thing about a third-world country:they always favor and sympathize with the majority; even if the latter has very narrow minds and irrational views.

Pacquiao-Mayweather: Let's RUMBLE!

Manny and Money: "Really?" or "Really!"?
In the spirit of the late Jimi Jamison and his musician comrades: “Survivor”; boxing fans might just be able to bellow out the words “It’s the Moment of Truth.”. But this proclamation is not about the L.A.-based dashing Johnny Lawrence versus the Newark-originated scrawny Daniel Larusso facing each other in a martial arts tournament. Rather, it refers to the potential and long-awaited boxing match between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.
The two “pound-for-pound” rivals had been going at each other via the media and other means of publicity, but not a boxing ring. Yet there has been a previously released announcement that the undefeated Mayweather had offered his Filipino adversary to face him in 2015. Manny Pacquiao had given statements of all the things he looks forward to doing to the American fighter. One of which gives a suggestive impression of the well-known past time of cockfighting. ‘Pacman’ vows to give the audience a “thrilling and entertaining fight” but he aired his doubts that ‘Money’ would not engage him in a slugfest. In addition, the Filipino says he will “chase (Mayweather) wherever he goes.” A lot of people who have witnessed legal, or illegal, cockfighting events may have come across one poultry running away from another in pursuit. Will Floyd Mayweather set aside his “dance steps” and face his Filipino counterpart like a tough contender; or will he shame himself as he shows the world how good he is at running away from his opponent?
There is another possible issue, which may just seem idiotic to very serious boxing fanatics but which may be accepted by many Filipinos. That is: maybe Mayweather is not really scared of facing The Pacman; but is more worried about the enchanted power which may strike him from OUTSIDE the ring. It was not so long ago when Timothy Bradley was using his agility to ridicule Manny Pacquiao in their recent fight; when the media caught images of Dionisia Pacquiao (Mommy D) pointing two fingers at her son’s rival and muttering what seemed like curses or magical condemnations; (giving a different meaning to the Microsoft application “POWER-POINT”).It worked against Bradley; so could this be what is causing a lump in Mayweather’s throat?

Of course; each time a potential battle between Mayweather and Pacquiao was announced; there was always some reason or alibi the American would put up in order to make its realization difficult, i.e. he demands a larger payment and wants the money from the pay-per-view sales; or that the Filipino fighter would not allow blood tests to be done on him. These actions will have multitudes of Filipinos and other boxing fanatics worldwide rolling their eyes and sighing “OH, BROTHER!”  (Would he like a stool sample, instead?)
If any of the readers of this article can recall the movie “Wild, Wild West”; there was a scene where the evil Dr. Arliss Loveless mocked the heroic Jim West as they were dangling from a chain. Without any suggestion of racial discriminations to African-Americans; those words might just be appropriate for Pacquiao supporters and the frustrated boxing enthusiasts to utter to Floyd Mayweather: “You may be black as night on the outside; but inside you are yellow.”

A Comic Couple: Bike Rider and Media Mam

"Yippie-ay-yay! A Ghost Rider in P.I."
A recently published link on Twitter revealed a photo of  DILG Secretary Mar Roxas righting himself after his motorcycle had accidentally gone down along with him. He was said to be making inspections at the area of Taft, Samar where Typhoon Hagupit had first caused its devastating effects on the Philippines.
Critics who have taken note of his published image raises the issue that the said government official was disregarding a mandate which requires all motorcycles to don protective head wear; specifically those which are required to follow standards set by the Bureau of Product Standards (BPS).
Detractors presume he was not suited with a head gear so as not to hinder his facial appearance from being noticed by the masses in the area; a place where his presence was not really a necessity since there were already appropriate personnel to attend to the after-effects of the typhoon’s passing. It is a suggested hypothesis that the recognition of his presence in such ‘trouble-infested’ zones would earn him acclaim and hence assure him a chance of gaining the votes of individuals who took note of his “concern and effort” to help. What does this say of such government officials? That they are willing to disregard the very same laws they have worked to enforce, for their own potential benefit?
Taking a long look at the picture of Secretary Roxas; his wardrobe appeared rather casual: a cap, a jacket, and a simple pair of pants. With the attention of the masses in the said area of Samar focused on their respective concerns; perhaps another possibility was a ‘scripted’ accident (?) If his clothes and the humble motorbike caused his presence to be disregarded; even if his facial features were not hidden by a helmet; perhaps the next best thing to do in order to call the people’s attention is to feint a slight accident. Maybe even a few residents of the area may have caught the unfortunate incident when it occurred and were possibly surprised to take note of a political figure in their midst.(And those who held him in disfavor would have wished the bike cartwheeled instead of just slanting downwards; but still noticing him.)

In addition to DILG Secretary Roxas’ issue, the specified link was also criticizing his spouse, Korina Sanchez- renowned journalist for the ABS-CBN network; for suggesting that Filipinos pray for the alteration of the typhoon’s course and make it head for Japan instead. In addition, she was criticized for donating sandals to the victims of another past storm where her husband led relief operations; footwear which bore here name.
What is it with this couple? They might just have a hidden agenda; some sort of inconspicuous scheme to enhance their image; a political and media figure supporting one another to climb the ranks of authority? In time, a comical reality might just take place when a husband and wife may rule the archipelago as king and queen. Goodbye to the republic and a new monarchic age begins.

Taking the entire link into consideration and reflecting on a literal comic-movie metaphor some years back; the two mentioned personalities may just be a fit personification of Johnny Blaze (aka The Ghost Rider) and his newscaster sweetheart, Roxanne Simpson; applauded, reputed, and famed.
Paper Bags in Laguna. Get Real!
Among many other issues which give the province of Laguna a bad image is the fact that paper bags are used in place of the more conventional plastic bags to the chagrin of the customers patronizing commercial areas. Walk into reputed supermarkets in the Sta. Rosa or Biñan areas and you would most certainly feel the “promdi-ed image” of the provincial areas. They are supposed to hold a reputation for advancement but they pack their customers’ purchased goods in brown paper bags.
Hold the paper bag at a specific angle which does not coincide with the weight of its contents; and it rips apart too quickly. Carry it with one hand underneath and another forearm half-embracing it; the sweat from the skin would cause the paper material to become soggy and, most likely, allow any weighty materials inside to punch a hole through the fabric; e.g. a can of meatloaf, a bottle of champagne, or a cluster of fruits or vegetables. And pitiful are the mothers who suffer the dilemma and confusion of carrying their groceries or children home; or at least out of the supermarket/mall area.
Is it because this is a “province” and the individuals in the location still believe in the ‘old ways’ and harmonizing with nature? Is this the reason officials put up restrictions or prohibitions on materials which they wish to blame for any difficulty or damages to the environment?
Perhaps it is time the authorities in Laguna opened their eyes to reality and accept the fact that, ever since the industrial revolution came to be; this world already began to depreciate in environmental aspects; no matter how slow the process of destruction is taking. In the case of plastics in the said province; it is not the material that causes hazards to nature but, rather, the people that use them. Whether in Manila or the provinces, undisciplined individuals will be the very factor that makes the problems in the surroundings. (Maybe it would be better if these people who throw plastic materials in sewers and estuaries be the ones thrown in place of the trash instead; their corpses rotting faster than the non-biodegradable plastic?)
The Laguna officials have to become aware of their territories, look at the sewer systems, streams, and other waterways and notice that wood, metal, Styrofoam, glass, and even dead animals clog the passages other than plastic bags. One specific example is a canal/stream/creek along the fork of the Old National Highway leading to the Sta. Rosa municipality on one side, and the Robinson’s Sta. Rosa Mall on the other. Other than the acclaimed plastic materials floating in it, there exists the presence of the above-mentioned objects.
So why become so meticulously defiant against plastic bags? The people in authority pretend to be concerned about the environment, most likely, just to enhance their images as worthy candidates in the next election. Perhaps they should get out of their public offices and start directing traffic instead. From the length of the Robinson’s mall at the boundary of Sta. Rosa, all the way to the Olivarez intersection; vehicular traffic is the inconvenience of motorists and commuters. Have a few paper or plastic bags in the buses, cars or jeepneys; and it won’t make much of a difference as the collection of carbon monoxide created by the massed-up volume of vehicles caught in traffic.
It has become a reality that this world has progressed by its own destruction. Global advancement became a truth when people began to exploit the world’s resources either for their own benefit or that of societies. Hence, maybe it is time we began to swallow the fact that mother Earth is inevitably headed for its demise; and we can only slow it down by creating laws and mandates to discipline people. But, then again, the know-it-all’s who come up with all these also have to consider the welfare of the masses; and avoid causing them inconveniences.

Plastics are just one of the causes for the demise of the planet. It, this world; WILL end; and maybe we will be as extra-terrestrials looking for another planet to occupy when ours has passed. As with rubber, metal, glass, paper, etc.; the discipline with regards to usage and disposal of plastics should be put into practice, in order to buy this planet a little more time for the next generations…and not make it so frustrating for them to carry home their purchases.

An Irony of Epilepsy
In the early days of the world, especially in the beginning of what every human life took to be called ‘civilization’; epilepsy was usually seen as more of a curse or some form of spiritual damnation which had befallen certain unfortunate individuals. Perhaps in the time of Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmsdale;(or in that of the fellow whose image had promoted a world-famous oatmeal brand); an individual who was found to encounter bodily convulsions, foam at the mouth, and have his/ her eyes roll back up into their sockets would be hiding from a lynch mob carrying torches or ropes with hangmen’s nooses fashioned at its end. These would-be practitioners of God’s justice would not even think twice to show some mercy and have the woe-begotten soul wear a piece of cloth with the letter ‘E’ stitched on it, instead; even if it were to suggest the world “evil” and not the technical term of the neurological handicap.

Fortunately, for the Emperors Julius Caesar and Napoleon Bonaparte; their stature may have saved them from the condemnation of the ignorant masses. And it would have been probable that their families and trusted servants who knew of their illnesses already had a more ancient term which went: “Conceal yon truths ‘neath folded sheets”; equivalent to the present days’: “Let’s keep it under wraps”.

In modern times, when people are more knowledgeable and versed with medical illnesses; epilepsy is not so feared and looked upon in the manner it was misunderstood centuries ago. In fact, it is not taken as seriously as that of a person with a missing leg, or a severe case of rheumatism. A social network site for epileptics had members complaining that a medical branch of the Philippine government does not consider epilepsy as a disability any longer. Perhaps it is also because of its reputation as not being a fatal illness; at least not directly.

Since most epileptics do not have an outer countenance that suggests their illness, there is a possibility that they could easily be disregarded as individuals free of any handicap.

I had encountered and incident when I was waiting for my wife just outside the line of cashiers at a renowned supermarket at Laguna. Tired, I decided to sit down at a plastic bench provided for senior citizens and persons with disability. A security guard approached me and claimed that I was not supposed to sit there. When I protested that I was an epileptic; he just sneered and repeated himself. I stood up and sarcastically asked him if I had to “strut my stuff” in front of him to prove my point. We exchanged unfavorable stares and then parted ways.

The irony of epilepsy at present, and in the past, is simply put this way:

·        During the years of ignorance, an epileptic had to plead to the many around him to believe the truth that he was not possessed by an evil spirit; and that he was supposed to be considered as any other ordinary mortal; blessed and loved by the heavens.
·        In the new age of technological and medical advancements; a person with a case of epilepsy had to convince the people around him that he was an “unfortunate” soul with a handicap, or disability, in order to earn their consideration and respect;…(before he turned green or his head ignited with flames).

With this irony, epileptics will have to withstand and face the manner society treats them. They are fortunate to be shown mercy in the past centuries; and not strung at the gallows. In the same way, they are lucky enough if they take a seat on a public utility vehicle-designated for disabled persons, and not told by a grouchy senior citizen to move their rear end and surrender the spot they occupied.

The Internet and Telecommunications: Can They Be Causes of Epileptic Seizures?

The Internet and Telecommunications: Seizure Triggers?
The trigger of a gun, when taken into context, is a subject that would be taken as hostile. It is the object which is the very starting point of a death or an injury; a crime or the practice of justice. But, for epileptics, another kind of trigger exists in the vocabulary of those suffering their unfortunate predicament. And this, too, is a point of origin for the occurrence of seizures. It is what is termed as “seizure triggers”.
These are undetermined factors which causes abnormalities or irregular functions in the human brain which, consequently lead to the existence of epileptic attacks or seizures. Since it is understood as being a “case-to-case” basis from one person to another; there is no one finalized and general cause for the episodes experienced by the persons with seizure disorders.
So many have been hypothesized or designated for a few individuals with the illness; perhaps one’s cranial reaction to flashing lights; intense physical stress; a specific odour; or a childhood head injury; and so many others. But would it not be a topic to ruminate over if the internet and such network communication frequencies were suspected of being another form of seizure triggers?
If the brain is said to possess electrical charges in itself; without any such being inflicted or induced on it; perhaps another possibility is the hypothesis that the human brain is capable of acting as a radar or antennae which can pick up frequencies transmitted by technological equipment such as computers and/or cell phones. If it can take in sound by the ears; photosensitive subjects via the eyes; olfactory sensations by the nostrils and other such through the human body’s senses; and then automatically register the inputted content within the brain; there just might be a possibility that the signal transmission of phones and internet-related equipment can be detected by the brain.
Would it not be a physical, or medical, hazard if the very technological advancements of the present day were the causes of epilepsy in certain individuals? It would be quite a chaotic issue of this possibility was ever discovered by the medical world. It would also be an irony if such informative sources such as the internet-with its details and records of illnesses and potential cures-was designated as worthy of criticism for being unfavorable to individuals with seizure disorders.
If this contradiction ever became a reality, perhaps only two actions can be done; as in the days of old: let the masses choose to hang the epileptics or burn those who promote technological advancements at the stake.
Yet, as in modern days, factories and bio-hazardous establishments exist with its detractors and supporters. So as carbon dioxide allows transportation for individuals and, at the same time, slowly cause the death of others; then telecom institutions and internet service providers can still be appreciated by the very same people who suffer the predicament of epilepsy because of it.

Of course; the relation between the mentioned illness and the potential ‘seizure triggers’ have yet to be discovered.

Parents and Offspring: The Changes and Ties

For The Times, They Are A-Changin'
(Bob Dylan)

When my son was born, my mother-in-law assisted us in caring for him during his very early and sensitive days in this world. While she was lulling him to sleep, I came over and struck up a conversation with her. We were discussing about how so much love, patience, and determination was required in rearing a child. During these moments, when people become grandparents; and they have gone through so much with their experiences in raising their own offspring; they have a tendency to be rather romantically emotional.

As with my mother-in-law, I heard the same lines from my aunt; a few of my wife’, as well as mine: “Kapag malaki na; sasagot-sagutin ka nalang.”.  The English translation may not pierce the heart so much as the word in Filipino. But this suggests the sometimes inevitable behaviour of children towards their parents upon their awareness of liberty and independence. What exactly does it say?

“When they are older, they shall merely answer you with no restraint, respect or modesty.”

Meaningless and forgotten are all the days and nights of relentless efforts to provide and care for the child. This is the reality that most parents sulk about when they no longer can dictate the ways their children must follow. And they, the elders, tend to look back at their own past and how they were when they, too, discovered freedom and free will from the authority of their parents.

Is this karma? Or is it fate? Shall parents have their sons and daughters converse with them impudently as they once did with theirs? Perhaps there is no telling what shall befall individuals. Those who may have become harsh toward their elders may know the very same sorrow when their own children treat them in the very same way. Or perhaps, they shall be forgiven before they do?

The factor causing this widening gap can undeniably be blamed on the changing world. The times are altering; and with it is the very manner of living in this world. Sometimes the elders cling to way no longer applicable to the style of life. And this may cause the younger generation to know a contemptuous and challenging air towards the elder.

The youth of the 70’s; with the hippies’ manner of behaving may find that the music of the Beatles and John Denver are loathsome to the youth of the 21st century; the very generation that idolizes rap music and half-naked singers. How do the elder individuals merit the patience of their young when they are admonished for not comprehending the utilization of more modern technological gadgets as cell phones and computers.

Senior citizens would clump together in some assembly or government institution; sitting in rocking chairs or La-Z Boy couches and start their narrative with the words: “In my days…”; only to have an emotional outburst with their regretful nostalgia….recalling how they ridiculed their own elders as they are experiencing with their young.

What does it mean to be a parent? How is it to be a child?

It is a design of life’s reality that a father and/or a mother shall have to interact with their children; and vice-versa. Their bonds are never perfect because of their different ideologies and notions. But however it is; with the impudent and rash interactions or the more modest and respectful ones; the young shall know how it is to be the old; and the endless line of generations shall continue in the manner of discovering reality.

You Better Watch Out, You Better Not Cry....

In the Philippines, the Christmas air is making itself felt. Filipinos would probably be looking forward to sending their Yuletide greetings and packages to loved ones who are distant from them. If not; they are most likely making plans to visit bazaars and or taking children to godparents to get their early blessings. But there is a cloak of apprehension present as typhoon Ruby is making itself manifest in the P.A.R.
Is this entity a factor that is meant to dampen the spirit of Christmas in the Philippines? When individuals tend to become gallant and liberal with their spending; and even temporarily forgiving to the reputed personalities they have pointed that condemning finger at all year round; the ambiance of serenity is disturbed by this ominous creation of nature that threatens to make a mark as its predecessors in the past years.
It was just last evening that a television show aired the catastrophic occurrence of typhoon Sandy at New York. Teary-eyed, dejected, yet still hopeful; New Yorkers said "We'll come back. We always do.".
The Filipinos in the Visayas region may have yet to match the Yankee spirit displayed by Atlantic-billeted Americans back in 2012. Those in the northern area of Luzon shall have to widen their hearts not just for the Christmas season but for extending assistance and charity to potential victims of the typhoon Ruby. And, eventually, this shall be the opportunity for detracted government figures to enhance their images; as they take advantage of the yuletide spirit to feign their concern over brothers and sisters pummeled by nature's force down south.
This, too, would be the opportunity for telecom networks to raise an alibi for their poor performance; using the unfavorable weather as an excuse for below-average services.
All these and so much more imaginable situations may occur over the Filipino citizenry when a storm comes to tinker with the everyday lives of the masses. The chimney-less homes of the Philippine residences may not be the reason why St. Nick might be having second thoughts about visiting the country;...and Rudolph's nose may not be so strong a beacon to break through the shafts of wind and rain.

Imagine A Life Without the Internet

Life Without the Internet

At present, almost everything in the world runs on the very essence of the internet. It was just a little over two decades ago when the world thrived on what this modern day would call “antediluvian”. It was the ‘old way’ which the elders and senior citizens of this day find so complicated and burdensome to comprehend. But understanding the internet’s benefits and advantages is not too necessary a task for such individuals; whether in their later years or just out-dated by the modernization of the times. As long as they can get a glimpse of their grandchildren on some tablet or cell phone; maybe talk to an old war veteran buddy via Skype; that would be sufficient enough. The difference with these persons and those who ARE adept with the utilization of the internet is that, the latter don’t just shrug their shoulders when their network’s services falter or when some complications over their billing statements arise.

Their businesses and affairs are eventually hindered; causing a lot of frustrations and unavoidable complaints. Of course, doesn’t everything have its price; even technological advancements? So there are misunderstandings and flaws when taking advantage of this new asset of the present world. People tend to become hostile in their own ways: putting up a sarcastic or emotional conversation with their providers over the phone; or even claiming to figuratively practice cannibalism with the intent of “having the network employees for breakfast”.

But what if some divine being; perhaps an ‘angel-of-death’, made itself manifest and, with a wave of a hand; flung the entire world back into the days when the internet was something not even imagined?

Oh what a drastic manipulation that would be upon the people of this new age! Imagine the children of today, rushing into school libraries and shoving each other for the first place at the card catalogue; only to find the intended book missing. Finding an alternative would not be an easy task as it is when one can just sit behind a computer and rely on the services of Google and Wikipedia.

The people who want to get personal, as well as professional, mail to those distant from them would have to rely on the tardy and, often, delayed services of the post office. Birthday greetings and other such important messages which could be sent via Google and/or Yahoo would go at a snail’s pace before delivery and receipt can be realized. Without the flaws of the internet services to complain about; people would air their disappointment to the anachronistic ways of the postal service.

Maniacal personalities would surely be safe from having their personally intimate lives broadcast for the entire world to see. Yet other forms of entertainment; especially such as those which merit the intense enthusiasm of a vast number of population, can only be witnessed with repetitive and lengthy commercials of paints, cement, and mosquito coils as in the 1980’s; when Marvelous Marvin Hagler’s fights took until dusk to watch in its completion.

Without the reputed “pay-per-view” streaming provided by telecom networks; citizens of third-world and slow-developing nations would start to discuss a sporting event which, most likely, had already become yesterday’s news at other more technologically advanced countries.

Besides these major setbacks; there would be a myriad more of unfavorable situations people would have to put up with; if the internet; with all its faults and shortcomings, vanished from man’s present-day life. Hence, as with the slow methods of progress from decades ago; let us just air our complaints; withstand arguments over billing statements and charges; and give internet providers a piece of our mind whenever their services fail to meet expected standards. After all, as with the light bulb of Thomas Edison; some flaws and imperfections must have to be discovered in order for improvements to be set in motion. And advancements, in the modern world, can only move forward in order to become beneficial to mankind.

Moderation: A Holiday Myth

Moderation: A Holiday Myth

The Yuletides are approaching once again; as inevitably as the world turns. With it comes the spirit of giving, generosity, charity; every virtue that is worthy in the life of man towards his fellow human beings. However, the so-called Christmas spirit, especially in the Philippines is the mostly utilized alibi against the practice of moderation. Walk into a grocery or into a crowded market a bit past the middle of December and there, obviously, are the masses of gallant Filipinos spending their hard-earned income on the essential ingredients for the upcoming Yuletide feasting; “The Noche Buena”.

For a large part of the year, individuals practice moderation with the principle that earning is not an easy feat to do. The affluent in such reputed residential areas or those near, or in, the impoverished sector; people normally keep a close watch over their financial assets; using these in the most reasonable and conservative methods. There are those who would rather wait for the bi-monthly sale of renowned malls, or perhaps go to downtown bazaars; also termed as the “ukay-ukay”, just to avail the cheapest prices possible.

The eleven-month-long period of modesty and thrifty mannerism, however, all go up in smoke when blinking lights adorn houses and commercial venues; politicians and traffic enforcers start making appearances with idiotic red and white headwear; and the never-dying Christmas carols are resounding almost everywhere. In the Philippines, nobody wants to play Ebenezzer Scrooge when the citizens are so festive and high-strung about spending. With the ardour of dishing out money to hold family gatherings and social assemblies; Charles Dickens’ three ghosts would be completely insignificant amidst the masses of Yuletide-enlivened citizenry.

A group of persons not going with the flow of the usual holiday practices would, most likely, be chastised or judged as pathetic and lifeless. So it really does not matter how much is spent, or if debts are created just to carry out the practiced yuletide gatherings in the Philippines. For one evening, the virtue of moderation becomes a myth. It, therefore, becomes the “spirit” or “ghost” of Christmas in the republic; one that does not linger to teach the individuals a relevant lesson within the evening of December 24, or the following day. It makes itself manifest after the financial assets of Filipinos have literally gone up in smoke; if not swept off the pavement during the morning of January 1st; a few evil spirits probably still lingering about since some firecrackers were poorly manufactured and failed to take part in the midnight noise barrage.

It is undeniably inherent in the character of Filipinos to not hold back and forget restraints when it comes to occasions of festivities. That is what makes their trademark around the world as the most hospitable nation in Asia. And if they are ever to be chastised by other more advanced nationalities as being unreasonably impractical with the use of their assets; they would merely shrug their figurative shoulders as a hypertensive fellow, attending a dinner of roast pork and flowing alcohol, would.

As John Lennon’s immortal song goes, (but rephrased):  “So? This is Christmas!”
